DISKORDIA FALL/WINTER 2017

ДISKORДIA plays editions 40 through 60 trying out possible soundtracks for the fall of patriarchy. Every Tuesday on Kanal 103, 6pm to 8pm. This fall, I have naturally been focusing on queer artists and potentially omitted music that comes directly from the artists, without the support of any cultural conglomerate. 

We spent most of the time listening to artists coming from all corners of the world, some of which were already deemed queer class of 2017 and some of which still remain in their very local environment and yet, somehow reach me and my friends in Skopje. So, it has been a period of discovering and carefully listening to Leikeli47, Lady Leshurr, Nadia Rose, Honey C, Quay Dash, Ah Mer Ah Su, but also always revisiting icons such as Nina Simone, Missy Elliott, AGF, or Princess Nokia, Tyler, The Creator, Sevdaliza and others.

DISKORDIA LOVES PRINCESS NOKIA

But you've already known that from my radio playlists.

Yesterday I went to see her perform live at the Prizren Doku Fest and I just wanted to share with you my greatest impression from her performance, also a first one of such kind in my life. 
"If any of you women feel unsafe here please step forward and let me know and I will take care of you. If any of you trans people also feel unsafe please come to me too." Or something like that.

Never have I felt safer in a crowd before, and my first one of this kind was back in 1997. No, I didn't think PN will jump and punch an asshole for me, I always do that for myself, but taking an explicit stance made the whole experience much more enjoyable.

I know many artists stand for/against issues in different ways, but this really made my night. Especially because as I was getting ready to leave the venue and head for Skopje a young boy came up to me and apologized for his heavy >unintentional< physical harassment I reacted against (happened at the very moment of the legendary dont-fuck-with-my-energy-chant from 'Brujas'). 

1st time ever. I am 35.

These days in May have been rich in dissidents' music of all kinds for me. Inspired by them, made by them, but also music that made them. 
I have enjoyed many tones and sounds, some specially made for DISKORDIA. Such is todays' mix we are diving into, gently provided to us by Boksi Boksitronović, a multi-faceted artist and an amazing user of language/s currently residing in Belgrade.

He recently released an EP for PMG Recordings. Apart from the joyfully pretty music, the EP featured an iconic cover calling for a stop on dog (animal) cruelty. 

In addition, we check out some cool Yugoslavian music from the 70s and 80s and revisit some new favorites /Sevdaliza, /Umfang, /Delia Gonzalez, /AGF, /Myra Davies, /Gurdun Gut

DISKORDIA is back!
We dive in another social dissident's life that serves as an inspiration to musicians and all round cultural players. Such is the life of Assata Shakur, just recently priced $2mil. by the FBI. 
The former black panther has been living a dissident life in Cuba since the 80s and this is her word (from an article from 2016 http://rollingout.com/2016/11/26/castros-death-mean-assata-shakur/):

“My name is Assata (‘she who struggles’) Olugbala ( ‘for the people’) Shakur (‘the thankful one’), and I am a 20th century escaped slave. Because of  government persecution, I was left with no other choice than to flee from the political repression, racism and violence that dominate the US government’s policy towards people of color. I am an ex-political prisoner, and I have been living in exile in Cuba since 1984. I have been a political activist most of my life, and although the U.S. government has done everything in its power to criminalize me, I am not a criminal, nor have I ever been one. In the 1960s, I participated in various struggles: the black liberation movement, the student rights movement, and the movement to end the war in Vietnam. I  joined the Black Panther Party. By 1969 the Black Panther Party had become the number one organization targeted by the FBI’s COINTELPRO program. because the Black Panther Party demanded the total liberation of black people, J. Edgar  Hoover called it “greatest threat to the internal security of the country” and  vowed to destroy it and its leaders and activists.”

*** After a short break I am back on Kanal 103 Tuesdays 6-8pm. New and old music and sounds of the dissidents. In the meantime, I visited some new and old places and neighborhoods and people >>> airports are cities too. Except there is a strict hierarchy, based on so many things. The one codifying our experience on the travels is based on our point of origin (passport) and point of arrival (boarding pass). The "nicer" these two are, the nicer the experience. I've been on both ends and the arbitrarity is ridiculous because I am always the same person.

DISKORDIA 021

Diskordia in the service of hardworking women again: I present to you a local artist, recently got my attention, but has obviously been working hard for some time now. She performs as Klara, wandering around clubs and studios, recently announced that she finalized her first studio, to completely dedicate to the musical endeavors she has started. Some of it is her own solo work, some of it is in a colab with another recent acquisition on the Macedonian electronic music scene - Defect 13. Klara can also be heard perform as a dj!
